The Bowline Knot

THE AMERICAN BACKPACKER

The bowline is a very popular knot used by many people and professions.  The bowline dates back to the 16th century.  It was used primarily as a maritime knot that was used to secure items on a ship such as the sails.  The bowline has found its way into many different applications and professions.

The bowline is used extensively by rescue personnel and those involved in mountaineering.  The bowline is also used to secure small aircraft.  The bowline is great for securing heavy loads.  When tension is put on the rope it constricts the bowline knot preventing it from coming loose.  The bowline is also very easy to untie in emergency situations.

I use this knot for many applications when I am on my Wilderness Expeditions.  Below is a video on how to properly tie this knot.
